Shortly after your arrival at St. Luke’s our Doctor and admission Nurse will discuss your individual care in a relaxed and unhurried manner.
Admissions are usually for 7-10 days and should be for the following reasons :
What to bring with you: All current medications and dressings, Toiletries, Night clothes and slippers, Day clothes, shoes and coat (if required) We would like you to feel free to bring in personal items such as photographs, pictures etc. which will help you feel at home. If you have any tablets, medicines or dressings prescribed by your own doctor it is important that you bring them with you (with original packaging) and hand them into our nursing staff.
At St. Luke’s we have a Day Hospice, which is held Monday to Friday between 10am and 3.30pm. In patients are welcome to join in and use the facilities if they wish.
Visiting the Hospice
Please report to our receptionist on each visit. This is necessary both to protect patients’ privacy and comply with Health and Safety regulations. Visitors are always welcome. For safety reasons, between the hours of 9pm and 7.30am the Hospice is closed to outside visitors. If you need to visit during these times, please use the intercom located on the right hand side of the main entrance.
We welcome visits from children, but in the interest of all our patients, we ask that visiting children are supervised by a responsible adult at all times and that they respect the privacy of our patients. When children are playing outside, responsibility for their safety rests with their parenting carer.
Every effort is made to accommodate individual family requirements on a 24 hour basis, but we would ask you to be mindful of the needs of patients, staff and other hospice users and to understand that there will be occasions when restrictions will need to be imposed on you. When this occurs we will endeavor to remain as flexible as possible, and maintain a supportive and caring role towards your needs.
Each morning our catering staff will visit to discuss the menu of the day. There is always a range of menu options and every effort will be made to accommodate individual tastes. There is no reason why your family should not bring in certain items of food or drink for you. Just ask them to check with the nursing staff first. As our kitchen is small we can only provide one meal a day for a family or friend who may be visiting you. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available to all.
In most cases pets are welcome to visit their owner but we would ask you to make prior arrangements with the nurse in charge.
All rooms have a wardrobe and bedside cabinet in which to keep your personal belongings. You will need only a small amount of money for incidentals. If you have any valuables please hand them to the nurse in charge. They will be listed and stored in the safe and you will be given a receipt.
Telephone facilities are available in each room. There are other telephones for use by patients and relatives. One is situated in the reception area. There are no restrictions on the use of personal mobile phones either by patients or visitors provided their use does not disturb other patients
Clothing and laundry
We would appreciate it if you could make your own arrangements for the laundering of personal clothing. However, if you have no one to do this, the Hospice staff will be pleased to assist. Please be aware, we cannot accept responsibility for articles lost or damaged during laundering.
Our own Chaplains representing the main Christian denominations will be happy to chat to any patient or relative. We have our own Chapel which patients and relatives are welcome to use. A short service is held in the Chapel daily at midday and regular services are held each Sunday at 4.00pm in the Lounge Bay area of the Hospice. Your own Minister of Religion will be most welcome to visit at any time.
