St. Luke’s Hospice, is service provider for South Essex Lymphoedema Service.
As the service provider for South Essex Lymphoedema Service we are pleased to be able to extend our established Lymphoedema clinical care, expertise and support throughout South Essex including Thurrock, Basildon, Brentwood, Billericay, Wickford, Southend, Canvey, Castlepoint and Rochford.
We have Lymphoedema Clinical Nurse Specialists and Lymphoedema Support Workers who can provide advice, support and practical help for people suffering from Lymphoedema in South Essex. The Service works closely with St. Luke’s Specialist Physiotherapy Service where both physiotherapists are also lymphoedema clinical specialists.
We have extended our service to see non cancer patients.
People living with Lymphoedema primary, (born with it,) or secondary and non-cancer living in South Essex. Referrals are accepted from Hospital Consultants, GP’s, Breast Care Nurse Specialists, other Clinical Nurse Specialists, Macmillan Nurses, through any Hospice service or as a self-referral. Referral forms can be requested by contacting St. Luke’s SELS with your address, phone number or fax details. It is critical to seek medical or Lymphoedema Clinical (Nurse) Specialist advice at the early onset of any oedematous swelling.
Appointments, when appropriate, will be made to suit individuals wherever possible. Appointments can be made at St. Luke’s Hospice in Basildon, St. Luke’s House in Corringham, Brentwood Community Hospital or Southend University Hospital. If mobility is a problem transport may be arranged where possible. For patients who are bed bound or unable to leave their home, a home visit can be arranged. If you are unable to attend an appointment it is important that you let the service know. Please help us by cancelling your appointment no less than 24 hours before whenever possible. A waiting list may operate with priority given to patients with advancing or palliative disease.
An assessment, normally at your fist appointment, will be carried out by a Clinical Specialist in Lymphoedema. Assessments may take up to one and a half hours and will include discussion and advice regarding skin care, exercise regime, recreational exercise, Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), Simple Lymph Drainage (SLD), Multi-Layered Lymph Bandaging (MLLB) and hosiery.
A support group for people with Lymphoedema and their carers / family is held three times a year, during the afternoon at St. Luke’s Hospice. The group meeting provides an opportunity to enjoy guest speakers, gain information, advice and support, meet and talk to other people with Lymphoedema and speak to specialists on an individual or private basis. Refreshments are provided during the afternoon.
